Musings of a Mac Geek

3rd May, 2012. 10:16 am. Aging Kitties

So both my cats are now a little over 15 years old, and it's hard for me not to be aware (possibly hyper-aware) of their mortality. Saturday, I brought Audrey in to the vet because she seemed to be losing weight/getting more boney, and I was concerned she might have a hyperthyroid condition, since her last tests indicated she might be heading that direction. As I suspected, she has lost weight, but the blood-work came up negative for any thyroid issues. So on the one hand, Yay!, but on the other hand, why is she losing weight? It could just be her age, but one worries.

My other cat, Goblin, also seems to be losing weight, and in her case she also seems to be eating less, at least less of the wet food. As opposed to Audrey, who eats her share and whatever Goblin leaves. Plus I'd noticed the bump on the back of her nick right where it joins the head. So I brought her to the vet yesterday, and they verified that she's lost 1/2 a pound or so, and did bloodwork for that. The vet thought the bump was definitely a small mass of some kind, but figured it was probably benign since doesn't appear to have been growing since I noticed it. But I had them remove it anyway, and do a biopsy on it. Still waiting for all those results. In the meantime, Goblin (who now has a rather funny-looking shaved portion on the back of her neck) is understandably skittish of me, worried no doubt that I'm going to take her back to the bad place. Hopefully this will have diminished by the time I have to take her in to have her stitches removed.

So I wait. And I worry. And I try not to think too hard about how much time I have left with them. They are the first pets I ever had as an adult, and I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it when their time comes. We had dogs growing up, but we were lucky enough to have them both die naturally. I've never had to put a pet to sleep, and I'm not sure I can do it if one of them develops a painful, fatal illness.

Current mood: worried.

24th February, 2012. 1:05 pm. State of the Geek

So I haven't posted here in a while - partly because I didn't really have much to say, but also because a lot of the time I used to have for that kind of thing got diverted both to trying to keep up with the increasing number of social media outlets, and also to reading a bit more than I had been (although still nowhere near what I used to). But I find myself less and less interested in FaceBook lately, with their terrible interface changes and continued data mining. Plus it feels like my friends on it are spending less time posting about their own life and more time posting links, political commentary, FB game statuses, memes, etc. And I'm not really interested in that stuff. I wish there was some way for posts to be tagged as to what they contain, so I could just see what interests me. Since there isn't, the signal-to-noise ratio on FB has just become too high, and I find I only read it in fits and starts. But LJ I've been reading regularly, because the signal-to-noise ratio of my friends list here is much better. So today I thought I should post an update and (hopefully) return the favor. :)

How things are with me. )

Hmmm, that's probably enough update for now. :) Looking forward to seeing people at Ambercon!

4th April, 2011. 10:14 pm. Ambercon Games

I got six of my first choices, and the other two were second choices, which is cool. What's odd is that, according to the online game book, there's at least one case where I wound up in my second choice game, but my first choice game isn't full.

Slot 1 : "Six Feet Under" by Tymen VanDyk
Slot 2 : "The Way of Princes" by Mark MacKinnon
Slot 3 : "The Savage Fires of Amber" by James Arnoldi
Slot 4 : "Ill Met in Amber" by Kit Kindred
Slot 5 : "When the Queen says, 'Go and Die,'...: The Doom of Averoigne" by Kit Kindred
Slot 6 : "Dashing Blades Of Amber: Finale" by Sol Foster
Slot 7 : "Riddle Quest" by Bridgette Ruggles
Slot 8 : "Fast Times At Chaos High" by Sean McCabe

Current mood: exhausted.

17th August, 2010. 9:22 pm. Smoke Gets in Your Nose

They say the sense of smell is one of the most evocative. I believe it. Certain odors can evoke strong memories in me, specific senses of time or place. Today it was wood smoke. I could smell it for the first part of my bike ride home, and it brought to mind the Adirondacks and my grandparents' camp there, like it always does. Even on a hot and muggy day (which today thankfully wasn't), the smell of wood smoke makes me think of the coolness beneath the pine trees, the stillness of the lake at night, and my mom, grandmother and grandfather who loved those mountains so much. Amazing how so much memory can be bound up in a simple scent.

Current mood: melancholy.

I bought more plants than I probably should have, and didn't manage to look at the redbud trees, which were on my list. Plus they didn't have the kind of hydrangeas I wanted. *sigh* So what did I wind up with? Details, plus the rest of my weekend, behind the cut. )

20th March, 2010. 6:21 pm. Spring Flowers!

My tulips, hyacinth, daffodils and grape hyacinth are all poking above ground, and this morning I spotted the first three purple crocus flower buds. Yay! Plus the violets are blooming and there are signs that at least one of the hydrangeas survived the winter (the first time that's happened in three years of planting them). Now if only this weekend was as warm and sunny as the week was, there's so much yard work I could get done. Alas, it's back in the 30's and overcast. *sigh*

Current mood: busy.

OK, so this is kind of late - really late. In my defense, I thought I'd posted this back in May, but when I went looking for it, I couldn't find it. So either I forgot to post this, or I did and it got deleted somehow. If you've seen this before, my apologies. If not, consider this a whetting of the appetite for Ambercon 2010.

I'll start with my usual list of Con reports by others (feel free to let me know if I've missed any).

Curgoth: Ambercon update
Arref: ...and now, the traditional Ambercon summary of games
Bastard: News from the Bastardland Tribune
harleqwn: Notes from Ambercon 2009
Scary White Girl: And the recap begins... (friendslocked)
Jeremy Zimmerman: Ambercon 09 Recap

My Ambercon 2009 report. It's long, there will be quotes and there may be spoilers - you've been warned. )

Current mood: tired.
